On May 26, retired Lexington firefighter Ronnie Rollings and his wife were headed out to go fishing, when a car crashed near his property.
“My wife seen a bunch of dust. She heard a noise and by the time I looked up, all I seen was a bunch of dust and the telephone pole snapped off and that’s when we jumped in the golf cart and went down there,” Rollings told KOCO 5.
The car had flipped, and by the time Rollings got there, the driver had started crawling out.
"My wife was asking if anyone else was inside and she said my babies were inside,” Rollings said. "I knew immediately that we needed to get those babies out of the vehicle."
So the former firefighter did what he was trained to do and rushed into the burning car.
Body camera footage from Cleveland County deputies show that the children were pulled out just moments before the car became engulfed in flames.
"Heroes are everywhere every day, and this good citizen in Cleveland County minding his business one day and became a hero,” Sheriff Chris Amason told KOCO 5.
"I wasn't going to leave those kids in that car,” Rollings said.
